A life in dance

John Di Lam began his dancing career in his California hometown at the Marin Childcare Center, in Marin County, at age 4. Lam’s talent for ballet was immediately recognized by Margaret Swarthout, the then Director of Marin Ballet and he was offered a full scholarship. Subsequently, Marin Ballet was under the direction of Cynthia Lucas, and she was instrumental in introducing Lam’s talent to Canada’s National Ballet School.

In 2000, at age 15, Lam began his tenure with Canada’s National Ballet School under the directorship of Mavis Staines. John Lam was one of the few North Americans awarded yet another full scholarship from the Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation in Zurich, which supports upcoming dancers for study at schools all over the world. Lam studied for three years under the renowned ballet coach Sergiu Stefanschi. Upon graduation from the National Ballet School in 2003, Lam was awarded the Peter Dwyer Scholarship Award for remarkable promise in ballet, and Lam was invited by the Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, Mikko Nissinen, directly into Boston Ballet II. Lam quickly thereafter rose to the rank of Soloist in 2008¬†and to Principal Dancer in 2014.

Lam’s achievements include being a finalist in the 2005 Seoul International Ballet Competition, and being the only American male semi-finalist at the 2005 Helsinki International Ballet Competition. Lam was also the recipient of a Princess Grace Fellowship in 2005, which identifies and assists young emerging talent. John Lam has worked with a broad range of choreographers and coaches running the gamut from classical to contemporary ballet including: Roslyn Anderson, Merrill Ashley, Peggy Baker, Kathryn Bennetts, Eva Draw, Jorma Elo, Sorella Englund, Kevin Haigen, Sandy Jennings, Karen Kain, Cynthia Lucas, Sabrina Matthews, Mark Morris, Helen Pickett, Tony Rizzi, Toer Van Shayck and Christopher Wheeldon.

In the summer of 2006, Lam was featured in Pointe Magazine, the Men’s Issue; Lam also received a proclamation from the Mayor of San Rafael, California, for his outstanding artistic achievements. In addition to his career at Boston Ballet, Lam also models, and has acted in the motion picture industry. Lam resides in Boston, Ma.
